Succession and protection failures are often blamed on unusual weather. Weather matters, but a useful review asks which assumption failed: maturity, harvest duration, plant response, structure operation, or demand.

Two plantings bloom together

Why it happens: The later planting grows in warmer soil and longer days, while the earlier one spends more time in slow conditions. Cultivar response can also compress flowering.

Check: compare emergence, transplant, first-bud, and first-cut dates, plus temperature and day length across both plantings.

Fix: vary the interval by season, use cultivars with documented timing differences, or reduce the later lot. Do not keep adding a fixed fourteen days to the calendar when field records show compression.

A harvest gap appears

Why it happens: The prior crop ends faster than planned, the next crop is delayed, or disease and culls reduce usable stems.

Check: distinguish no flowers from no marketable flowers. Review stem grade, crop health, and the actual last-economic-cut date.

Fix: overlap plantings slightly, carry a different crop for the same bouquet role, or reduce commitments during the risky week. A backup should provide the missing function, not simply more color.

The last succession never matures

Why it happens: The calendar used summer maturity figures during cool, short days. The crop may remain alive without lengthening or opening.

Fix: establish a last useful planting date from local records. Add a fall slowdown allowance and trial the edge in a small block before committing sales.

The tunnel overheats

Why it happens: Clear weather raises solar gain faster than manual vents are opened, or vents are too small, obstructed, or closed for wind.

Check: inspect maximum temperature logs, canopy position, vent timing, fan operation, and forecasts. A single midday reading can miss the peak.

Fix: open earlier, increase suitable ventilation or automation, adjust shade where crop guidance supports it, and establish an alarm or backup owner. Do not assume cool outside air prevents interior heat.

Frost injures covered flowers

Why it happens: Cover was applied too late, edges leaked, fabric touched blooms, the cold lasted longer than stored heat, or the chosen material supplied insufficient protection.

Check: map injury against cover contact, edges, low spots, and thermometer locations. Record duration, wind, cloud, and crop stage.

Fix: improve deployment, use hoops or another layer where suitable, revise trigger temperatures, and accept the equipment's limit. Do not advertise a fabric as a guaranteed number of degrees without conditions.

Humidity and disease rise

Why it happens: Reduced air exchange, dense spacing, wet foliage, weeds, and late ventilation create long leaf-wetness periods.

Check: map symptoms, review watering time and vent logs, inspect lower canopy airflow, and identify the disease before treatment.

Fix: ventilate, irrigate the root zone, adjust spacing in future plantings, remove infected tissue appropriately, and use only labeled crop and structure treatments.

Pest populations build under cover

Why it happens: Protected conditions support rapid reproduction, natural enemies may be absent, and weeds or incoming plants introduce pests.

Fix: inspect incoming plants, scout on a schedule, identify pests, manage weeds, and plan exclusion or biological control with crop-specific expertise. Openings that admit pollinators may also admit pests, so the decision is crop dependent.

Salts increase under permanent plastic

Why it happens: Irrigation and fertilizer continue while rainfall no longer leaches the bed. Evaporation moves salts toward the surface.

Check: test soil electrical conductivity by zone and irrigation water where relevant. Compare with an open-field area managed similarly.

Fix: correct input loading and irrigation distribution, then use a test-based leaching plan only where drainage and water quality permit it.

The extension adds weeks but loses money

Why it happens: Early prices do not cover structure, cover, fuel, monitoring, culls, and slow yields. Demand may also be lower than expected.

Check: calculate contribution by planting date. Include depreciation, plastic, repairs, venting labor, heat, water, harvest, and unsold product.

Why did the second planting flower first?

Its warmer establishment conditions, cultivar behavior, healthier transplants, or better field zone may have accelerated it. Compare stage and environment records.

Can heating fix low winter production?

Heat cannot replace inadequate light, and energy cost may exceed crop value. Use crop-specific controlled-environment analysis.

Should diseased tunnel plants be moved outside?

Not as a default. Movement can spread a pathogen. Identify the problem and follow a sanitation and disposal plan.

When should a succession be canceled?

Cancel when bed timing, weather, nursery condition, labor, or remaining season makes the target quality and sales window unrealistic.
