This fictional case uses illustrative numbers. It shows how to audit a succession program, not how many days another farm should place between plantings.
The original rule
North Row Flowers sold 70 market bouquets each Saturday and supplied two florists. The manager planted every repeat annual on a fourteen-day interval from spring through late summer. The rule was easy to remember and appeared orderly on the crop map.
By July, three sunflower blocks and two celosia blocks peaked in the same ten days. In September, a final warm-season succession inside the high tunnel remained green but produced short stems slowly. The farm had both a glut and a gap despite completing nearly every planting date.
Rebuild the harvest record
The manager compared planned and actual dates for four sunflower successions:

Warmer soil and air accelerated later sowings. Successions 1 through 3 overlapped heavily, and the field crew could not cut all stems at the right stage.
Replace intervals with crop behavior
University of Illinois Extension describes strategic succession planting as sowing or planting in planned intervals to spread harvest. Its examples use vegetables, but the core point helped the manager: the interval is a method for producing the desired harvest pattern, not a result by itself.
For each flower, North Row now recorded:
- days to first cut by planting month;
- number of high-quality harvest days;
- marketable stems per bed foot;
- field-to-pack percentage;
- harvest minutes per 100 stems; and
- culls caused by opening too far in the field.
The next sunflower calendar widened or narrowed intervals by season from those local records. The farm also reduced stems per succession so one compressed week would remain within labor capacity.
Give every late crop a stop date
The failed tunnel block had been planted because space was open, not because a buyer needed its stems. It occupied the tunnel for nine weeks, required daily ventilation and irrigation, and returned 38 percent of the planned marketable stems.
The new calendar worked backward from the last viable selling week and included a fall slowdown allowance. If plants could not be set by the stop date, the bed moved to a cool-tolerant alternative or soil-cover plan.

Add product roles to the calendar
The former sheet listed crop names and dates. The revised sheet listed what each crop supplied:

This prevented a field full of focal flowers from being mistaken for a complete bouquet plan.
Limit by labor and cooler space
The crew measured its sustainable harvest and packing capacity as 1,900 stems on Friday plus 800 early Saturday. The weekly crop forecast carried an alert above 2,500 stems to leave room for culls and florist orders.
When the forecast exceeded capacity, the manager reduced a planting before seed was sown. Unsold stems were no longer treated as an unavoidable marketing problem after harvest.
Operate the tunnel from triggers
High-tunnel temperatures had been checked at lunch, after the hottest spike. The revised plan installed minimum-maximum thermometers at crop height and assigned morning, midday, and afternoon checks during changeable weather. Venting began from a crop-specific trigger rather than from worker comfort.
The tunnel received its own soil test, irrigation log, and pest map. Its cost line included cover replacement, repairs, and daily management.
Review the new season
The following year had fewer total sowings, yet more weeks met bouquet role targets. Sunflower losses from overmaturity fell, the last warm-season tunnel planting was canceled on schedule, and the freed bed carried a crop suited to the cooler window.
North Row did not eliminate weather risk. It replaced a memorable universal rule with crop evidence and operating limits. The calendar became a forecast that could be corrected rather than a list of dates that had to be obeyed.
Common questions
Why did later sunflower plantings catch the first one?
They developed in warmer conditions and moved through early stages faster. Crop and weather records are needed to confirm the local cause.
Why not harvest the glut earlier?
Harvest stage has crop limits, and immature stems may not open or perform. The solution was production sizing and timing, not lowering grade blindly.
Did the high tunnel fail?
No. One crop-date-market combination failed to cover its cost. The structure remained useful for crops with a documented protected-season advantage.
How often should succession intervals be reviewed?
Review after every planting and formally after the season. Update by crop and planting period rather than averaging all dates together.
