Integrated pest management, or IPM, is a decision system. It joins prevention, regular observation, correct identification, defined action points, several control methods, and follow-up. It does not promise a pest-free farm. Its purpose is to protect a saleable crop while limiting unnecessary cost and risk.
The University of California's statewide program defines IPM as an ecosystem-based strategy built on long-term prevention through techniques such as biological control, habitat management, cultural practices, and resistant varieties, with pesticides used only after monitoring shows they are needed.
That distinction matters in cut flowers. A few aphids on a vegetative lower leaf may be tolerable, while one insect inside a finished bloom may make the stem unsalable. A leaf spot on a crop sold leafless creates a different loss than the same spot on foliage used in bouquets. The farm needs crop-specific standards.
Build prevention into production
IPM begins before a symptom appears. Review the previous season by bed and crop. Note recurring insects, disease, drainage, weed hosts, crop residue, weak cultivars, and periods when the crew could not scout or spray safely.
Use that record to change conditions:
- buy clean seed, plugs, bulbs, tubers, and cuttings from dependable suppliers;
- inspect incoming material away from established crops;
- choose cultivars with useful resistance or tolerance when that information exists;
- space plants for the mature canopy and expected air movement;
- direct irrigation toward roots when wet foliage would raise disease risk;
- control weeds that shelter pests or compete with the crop;
- clean harvest tools, propagation surfaces, containers, and reusable stakes;
- remove badly affected crop material under a written disposal procedure; and
- keep cull piles away from active production.
Prevention cannot remove every threat. It can reduce the starting population, shorten favorable disease periods, and make later treatment more precise.
Scout the crop, not just the obvious damage
A weekly route is the minimum for many crops, but hot spots and fast pests may need more frequent checks. Divide the farm into named blocks. Inspect edges, entrances, stressed areas, dense canopies, and places with a history of trouble. Then inspect representative plants inside each block.
Use the right method for the target. Check growing tips and leaf undersides for aphids. Tap flowers over white paper for small moving insects. Look for stippling, webbing, distorted growth, mines, chewing, honeydew, frass, spores, lesions, wilt, root discoloration, and stem injury. Traps can show adult movement, but they do not replace plant inspection.
Record zeros as well as finds. A series of zero counts shows where and when a population was not detected. Mark the exact crop, cultivar, bed, date, plant part, symptom, count, and affected area. Photograph the whole plant, the crop pattern, and a close view with scale.
Identify before acting
Do not treat a symptom name as a diagnosis. Yellow leaves may reflect root disease, waterlogging, nutrient imbalance, mites, virus, herbicide drift, or normal aging. Wilt can come from vascular disease, cut roots, dry soil, heat, or stem damage.
Collect an insect specimen or a representative plant sample when field identification is uncertain. Keep roots and soil separate from foliage during shipment, include plants at different symptom stages, and send the farm history requested by the diagnostic laboratory. Preserve an untreated comparison area when practical.
The EPA describes IPM as a sequence that includes action thresholds, monitoring, identification, prevention, and control. Its framework also notes that seeing one organism does not automatically justify treatment. On a flower farm, the action point still needs local adjustment for crop value, harvest date, buyer tolerance, spread rate, and weather.
Choose a control sequence
Start with methods that fit the verified cause and pose the least practical risk.

Using several methods does not mean using all of them at once. Select a sequence that addresses the pest's life stage and location. Removing one badly infested plant may be more useful than treating an entire block. A biological agent released after a disruptive pesticide may fail because the sequence was incompatible.
Treat the label as the operating limit
For any pesticide, confirm that the site and crop are allowed, the target is listed as required, the rate and application method fit, and restrictions can be met. Check personal protective equipment, restricted-entry interval, preharvest or cutting limits if present, pollinator directions, temperature cautions, maximum applications, and resistance group.
The label controls. A social post, supplier note, or neighboring farm's practice cannot expand it. Maintain application and worker-protection records required in the farm's jurisdiction.
Measure the result
Return to the same flagged plants, traps, and untreated comparisons at a defined time. Record pest counts, new damage, crop recovery, beneficial activity, weather, and any injury. Old damage will not disappear, so judge new growth and new symptoms.
A useful review asks:
- Was the identification confirmed?
- Did the treatment reach the vulnerable life stage?
- Did pest pressure fall below the farm's action point?
- Did natural enemies remain active?
- Was there crop injury or a missed harvest?
- What prevention change belongs in next season's plan?
Common questions
Does IPM mean no pesticides?
No. IPM may include pesticides when monitoring, identification, and the action point support their use. It also asks whether preventive, physical, or biological methods can reduce the need.
Is a sticky card count an action threshold?
Not by itself. A count becomes useful when it is tied to a named trap location, interval, pest, crop stage, plant inspection, and a locally tested response point.
Should every damaged plant be removed?
No. Removal depends on the cause, spread risk, crop value, and whether the plant can recover. Confirm suspected contagious problems before moving material through the farm.
How often should a flower farm scout?
